3/16/2020 | Superintendent Andrea Celico Letter to District Families
March 16, 2020
As I have mentioned before, we are in an unprecedented time that is constantly changing. We know and understand that this imposed three-week closure will create a hardship for our families. You may have heard the governor say yesterday that it is possible that schools might be closed for the rest of the year. In the event that happens, we have already begun preliminary plans so we can be prepared. This is a sad time for so many. With that said, we want to do everything we can to help you get through this difficult time. Therefore, we have a number of things in place to hopefully ease the stress placed on our families:
Medical Support and Prescription Pick-Up
If you have any medical questions, we will have our district nurse available for you to call at 440-439-1500 ext. 7216 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. daily. Please remember that parents or guardians ONLY can pick up prescription medications unless your child has a self-carry order. If you were unable to go to your child’s school today (Monday), you will need to pick up your child’s prescription at Bedford High School. Please call the district nurse to make arrangements. (440-439-1500 ext. 7216).
School Events and Athletics
During the school closure all school-related events and athletic competitions have been cancelled, including the spring musical and kindergarten registration. Please refer to the district website for all event cancellations. The Ohio High School Athletic Association has decided to follow the same guidelines set forth by Governor DeWine. This means that in addition to all athletic competitions, all practices are canceled as well. In addition, during the closure, Bedford spring athletes are not to participate on any non-interscholastic teams (summer or travel baseball/softball), as the OHSAA will still view these athletes as in-season.
Computer Pick Up
Students in grades 6-12 are able to sign out one chromebook per family to take home. Drive-thru pickup service will be at Bedford High School in the rear of the building (near the stadium) during scheduled hours. Signs will be posted directing you where to go. All eligible students who apply will receive a chromebook that has been disinfected and tested to be in acceptable working condition, along with a charger cable. Heskett students will check-out the 1:1 laptop computer that was assigned to them at the start of the school year. Sixth grade students will also receive a carrying case, while supplies last.
To complete forms and schedule your technology pickup for March 17, 18, or 19, please visit: chromebook.bedfordschools.org If you do not have access to technology in order to complete the online form, please call the technology office at 440-786-3566.
BCSD has a limited number of wireless internet hotspots that will be made available for student use during the school closure. In order to determine how these devices will be distributed, there will be an application process. Applications are online at hotspot.bedfordschools.org and through the Technology Drive-Thru. If you do not have access to technology in order to complete the online form, please call the technology office at 440-786-3566. Those who are assigned an internet hotspot can pick it up from the Technology Drive-thru at Bedford High School. Kajeet internet hotspots use the Verizon network. Those who do not receive a Hotspot, or are in an area in which Verizon doesn’t have good coverage are encouraged to utilize Spectrum’s 60 day free home internet. Spectrum will offer free broadband and Wi-Fi access for 60 days to households with K-12 and/or college students who do not already have a Spectrum broadband subscription. To enroll call 1-844-488-8395. Installation fees will be waived for student households not currently subscribing to Spectrum. If you have additional questions about BCSD technology please email: firstname.lastname@example.org or call: 440-786-3566.
Expectations for Learning and Teacher Availability
If you have questions or would like to speak to your child’s teacher, please email him/her or leave a phone message. As a reminder, your teacher’s email is the first initial and full last name with the following domain @bedford.k12.oh.us. (Example: email@example.com). In addition, the teachers’ phone extensions can be found at directory.bedfordschools.org or on our website under Our District -> Staff Directory. Please be sure to read the letter your child’s teacher sent home, as it may include more specific ways and times for them to be reached. If you were unable to pick up your child’s supplies today, you may do so from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow, Tuesday, March 17. While the teachers may not be on hand, principals will be there to assist.
Third Trimester/Quarter Grades
We are sensitive that the end of the third quarter for our intermediate through high school students comes to a close on Wednesday, March 18. Our current plan to address this issue is to have teachers enter grades based on current work completed. Luckily, the end of the quarter comes at the right time. Our third quarter final grades will be posted to Gradebook March 24. As for the third trimester and fourth quarter for students, we have yet to establish a plan, as we are not sure how long this closure will last. Students are highly encouraged to complete the work that has been provided for them, as teachers will be taking the time to provide feedback and/or grade the work.
Attached is the link for the Flexible Learning Resource Site that we created to aid staff, students, and families in this process of, and transition to remote curriculum. This is a working live site that will continue to be updated with information. This site can also be reached by cutting and pasting this address into your internet browser: http://bit.ly/bcsd-flex
There is also a button on the district website under "District News” that will take you to the same link.
During the next three weeks, our custodial crew will be disinfecting our schools and doing a deep cleaning of all areas, with added attention to high traffic and high touch areas. Our technology staff spent the past weekend cleaning previously shared chromebooks in order for students to feel comfortable taking the devices home.
We will begin distributing “grab and go” breakfasts and lunches Monday through Friday beginning on Wednesday, March 18, at a number of locations and times. Meals will be provided for ANY child 18 and under. We will provide one breakfast and one lunch per child during that time. Please help us by going to meals.bedfordschools.org to fill out a two question survey to let us know if you would be interested in picking up daily meals for your child. This will help us with our planning. If you are unable to do that, please call your child’s principal and let him/her know if you will be taking advantage of our “grab and go” program through April 3. Thank you!
Our district website is also a good way to stay informed about district decisions, event cancellations and resources. Our COVID-19 page will be updated on a regular basis as decisions are made and new information becomes available.
Again, this is a fluid and evolving situation, but we are confident that our staff and community will come together to meet this challenge. We will continue to plan in the event that this closure is extended. We will be in communication with our families as we navigate this unprecedented situation. Please be sure to keep up with our website and communications regularly.
Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call your child’s teacher or principal at any time. While staff may be working from home, they will be checking their emails and phone messages regularly. In addition, if you need to contact me directly, please do not hesitate. Thank you again for your patience through this process. Take care and stay healthy during this unsettling time in our country.
