Immunizations Needed Before School Starts
The Ohio Department of Health (ODH) School Immunization Requirements include one dose of Meningococcal (MCV4) vaccine to be administered before a student enters the seventh grade. Therefore, a current sixth grader will need to show proof of having received the Meningococcal (MCV4) vaccine before he or she can return to school in the fall. The ODH also requires two doses of the MCV4 Vaccine to be administered before a student enters 12th grade. If the first dose was administered on or after the 16th birthday, a second dose is not required. Incoming 12th graders will need to show proof of having received the MCV4 Vaccine when they return to school in August.
A dose of Tdap is also required before a student enters the seventh grade. This dose is intended to be administered as a booster dose for students who have completed the required doses of the initial series of DTaP/DT/Td. Therefore; a current sixth grader will need to show proof of having received this booster dose before he or she can return to school in the fall.
If a child received one dose of Tdap as part of the original series, another dose of Tdap will not be required. The Tdap can be given regardless of the interval since the last tetanus or diphtheria-toxoid containing vaccine.
Incoming kindergartners must have a DPT, Polio, Chicken Pox, and Hepatitis B vaccine series, the measles immunization booster (second MMR shot), and the final dose of the polio vaccine.
Medical records will be checked. All immunizations are required before the first day of school. For more information and a more complete list of immunization requirements, visit the Ohio Department of Health’s website at: www.odh.ohio.gov/
