At Glendale Primary School, music is presented in a positive, interesting and enjoyable manner that will serve as a foundation for a life-long appreciation for music.
Glendale's Music Program works to capitalize on youngsters' natural love and curiosity for music and use of movement to express feelings. All efforts are made to further develop and expand upon these abilities. Areas of study include:
- Concepts (understanding how music works, including pitch, beat, dynamics)
- Rhythm and Notation (reading, writing, and performance)
- Singing (understanding and expanding vocal abilities)
- Movement (a means of expression and interpretation)
- Instruments (learning about the different instruments and families of instruments)
- Appreciation/Interpretation (expressing thoughts/feelings/ideas related to what was heard through discussing, drawing and writing)
Through study of these areas, the Glendale music program also supports achievement and proficiency testing by showing how music relates to what students are learning in the classroom.
The goal of Glendale School’s Physical Education Program is to introduce students to a variety of movement experiences so that they can develop a solid foundation of fundamental motor skills, movement concepts, and fitness concepts so that they value and enjoy participating in physical activities throughout life. Kindergarten students have physical education three times a week. First, second, and third graders meet twice a week. Classes are 45 minutes long.
Physical Education ABCs
In physical education class, students will exercise their bodies and their brains. First , second, and third graders learn a “word of the week” that relates to physical education. For example, students learn that “physical” is moving and “education” is learning. Next students follow the alphabet, starting with “A” for abdominals and ending with “Z” for zigzag.
Throughout the school year, the following units are addressed:
- Locomotor movements (walk, run, leap, hop, skip, jump, gallop, slide)
- Spatial Awareness (personal and general space, tag games)
- Fitness Concepts (strength, flexibility, endurance)
- Ball Control - Feet (soccer dribble, trap, kick)
- Hands (basketball dribble, passing, catching, set shot)
- Climbing (cargo net, ropes)
- Tumbling (rolls, sequences, inverted balances)
- Striking (volley, bump, set, paddles, batting tees)
- Multicultural Dances (Mexican, Greek, Russian, Jamaican, American)
- Jump Rope (long jump rope, rhymes, individual jump rope)
- Throwing (opposition, follow-through)
- Fitness Testing
Students are required to wear regular tennis shoes for physical education class. No boots, shoes with metal clips, dress shoes, shoes with heels, shoes without backs or sandals. This is for their safety and the safety of others and to prevent unnecessary wear and tear on equipment (mat, etc.).
