Barbara A. Patterson, Vice President
Mrs. Patterson was appointed to the Board in 2002 and was subsequently elected in 2003 and re-elected in 2007, 2011 and 2015. She was Vice President in 2005, 2007, and 2018, and President in 2008, 2010, 2015, and is currently serving as President in 2019. A career educator, Mrs. Patterson retired in 2009 after more than 39 years as a teacher and administrator in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District. She was an Assistant Principal at John F. Kennedy High School, Max S. Hayes Vocational School, Thomas Jefferson Middle School, John Hay High School, and Central Middle School. Prior to her administrative experience, she taught health, physical education, and biology. She also was a detention officer at the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Detention Center. Mrs. Patterson is a former member of the Ohio Association of Secondary School Administrators and a current member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and Phi Delta Kappa Sorority, Inc. She recently served as an Ohio High School Athletic Association Track and Field Official. She has a Master’s Degree in Administration and Supervision from Cleveland State University; a Bachelor’s Degree in Health, Physical Education, and Biology from Bluefield State College in Bluefield, W.Va.; and a diploma from the Philadelphia School of Practical Nursing in Philadelphia, Pa. She is a past-president of the Ohio School Boards Association’s Black Caucus, a position that she held for 6 years. This organization promotes public awareness of issues relating to racial diversity in schools and equity in education to enhance the academic achievement of Ohio’s students. She and her husband, James, reside in Oakwood Village. They have two children, one of whom is a Bedford High School graduate. Mrs. Patterson’s term expires on December 31, 2019.
