Greetings Glendale Families and Friends:
Thanks for visiting our website. Mrs. Radford, our assistant principal, and I are very excited about the 2016-2017 school year. Mrs. Radford is in the building two days a week and she will assist me with keeping things running smoothly and assisting teachers in providing students with the best education possible. Attending school daily and arriving on time are a top priority for us and we hope it is for you, too! Mrs. Radford has developed an incentive program for those students who attend consistently and arrive on time and will work with families when tardies and absences become a concern.
Glendale Primary is the school where our district’s youngest learners get started on their educational path. Our Bright Beginnings Preschool provides for the educational needs of 3-5 year olds. This year, we are excited about our very first class of full-day preschool for 18 four-year-olds. In addition, we will be educating approximately 460 students in Kindergarten, First, Second, and Third Grades. We have high expectations for our students when it comes to academics and behavior. Our school motto for this year is “Glendale Rocks…!” Our motto for behavior is “Respect: A Right and a Responsibility.”
The staff at Glendale works very hard on a daily basis to address the individual needs of all of our students. Enrichment and interventions are provided to our students based on data from assessments. A blend of direct instruction with the whole class, small group or individual students utilizing technology, and hands on instructional materials help students to achieve their maximum potential. Students can access online programs at school and at home to help them strengthen their reading and math skills.
Our students’ emotional well being is very important to us. We maintain a well-disciplined environment utilizing a flip card system where the daily goal is to “Stay on Green”. Our students are taught strategies for dealing with their behavior through a set of systematic lessons found in the PATHS program. PATHS stands for Positive Alternative Thinking Strategies. Our guidance counselor is available to address students’ daily concerns and our partnership with Beechbrook allows us to have a therapeutic counselor on staff for students needing ongoing assistance.
Glendale has an active PTA and we welcome volunteers into our building. All new volunteers to our building will be required to go through a fingerprint check. A detailed explanation can be obtained from personnel in our school office. In addition to our many parents and community members, we also are privileged to welcome volunteers from the Greater Cleveland Volunteer Association, US Bank Home Mortgage, Naturalists from the Metroparks, and therapy dogs who “listen” to the children read. Together with our staff, our volunteers help create the best educational environment for our students.
Of particular note, is our Glendale Discovery Garden located in an enclosed area beyond our playground. This is an authentic outdoor classroom equipped with a covered learning center, pond with a waterfall, wetlands, and planting boxes. There is, also, a walking path around the perimeter of this beautiful outdoor learning environment. We are currently using funds from three grants to upgrade our garden. The garden will be 20 years old next spring and we look forward to a special celebration near the end of the school year.
I am happy to set up a time for you to visit Glendale School and see first-hand the exciting educational opportunities taking place in our building.
