Heskett Regional contest participants.
By 9 a.m. on a Saturday, a time when most young teens are still in bed, a group of mathematically talented Heskett Middle School students sat in the Mayfield Middle School cafeteria March 3, wielding calculators and pencils. They were ready to prove their dedication to math and participate in the 2012 Greater Cleveland Council of Teachers of Mathematics (GCCTM) Math contest. Twenty three teams of 7th graders and 23 teams of 8th graders from 12 area schools competed at that location. Altogether, 500 students from 41 schools participated at six sites.
Heskett students worked in teams of three 8th graders through four events, each of which challenged the teams to solve a number of problems, testing their math skills. Liam Duffy, Michael Mohnasky and Camryn Hunter scored in the top 20% in the contest, earning the team medallions, the highest possible award. Two teams won blue ribbons at the event: Tayler Stevens, Jasmine Nowden and Shannon Howse; and Katie Schwab, Donovan Gaines and Antonio Patterson. Courtney Lockhart, Dionna May and Andrea Harris earned red ribbons. Heskett math teachers Jennifer Brown and Sharon Vlk coached the math teams.

The GCCTM is an organization of mathematics professionals who are committed to the improvement of mathematics education in Northeast Ohio. The purpose of the contest is to stimulate interest in mathematics among middle-school students. Students who are mathematically talented will find a broader field of competition, a chance to apply their knowledge, and a chance to meet other students with similar interests.
