Bedford Board of Education Vice-President Phil Stevens has been named to The Northeast Regional Executive Committee of the Ohio School Boards Association (OSBA). Each of the five OSBA regional executive committees determine policy for the region and plan programs and activities designed to carry out the purposes of the organization.
"I was so surprised when I received a phone call from (OSBA Regional Manager) Terri Neff, saying that I came highly recommended for this position by Cathy Johnson, past president of the OSBA," Stevens said. "I feel quite honored and look forward to this new challenge and opportunity to represent Bedford, as well as the entire region."
The Northeast Region is comprised of Ashland, Ashtabula, Carroll, Columbiana, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Harrison, Holmes, Jefferson, Lake, Lorain, Mahoning, Medina, Portage, Stark, Summit, Trumbull, Tuscarawas and Wayne counties. It sponsors two conferences (Spring and Fall), holds executive committee meetings, and recognizes "Superintendent, Treasurer and Principal of the Year awards," as well as a number of other OSBA recognitions. The executive committee also sponsors an annual graduating senior scholarship for students attending a teaching college.
Bedford Superintendent of Schools Sherman C. Micsak announced Stevens’ appointment to the executive committee at the January 26 meeting of the Bedford Board of Education. "This executive committee represents 220 school districts and over a half-million students," Micsak said. "We are incredibly proud of Mr. Stevens and know that he will be a compelling addition to the committee."
A 30-year educator, Stevens was elected to the Bedford Board of Education in November 2009, his term running from January 2010 through December 2013. He served as president of the board in 2011. Stevens is also serving his second term on the Board of Directors for the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OSHAA). He was elected to the Northeast District Athletic Board in 2005 and was that board’s president during the 2010-11 school year. He also has been a registered OHSAA football and basketball official since 1991 and has been an active member of the OHSAA Diversity Committee and the Northeast Ohio Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association. He resides in Bedford Heights and is employed as the Director of Athletics for the Warrensville Heights City School District.
