Child Sight, a program of Helen Keller International, came into the Bedford Schools and provided vision screenings for all students in grades five through nine.
If a student struggled with the eye chart and needed further assessment, he/she was then examined by a licensed optometrist. If the doctor determined the child needed eyeglasses, the child then selected frames from a large assortment of styles they had laid out on a table.
In a few weeks, the glasses were delivered to the schools. All of these services were offered to the students free of charge! A total of 241 students received a free pair of eyeglasses with a case: 53 at Bedford High School, 98 at Heskett Middle School, 41at Carylwood Intermediate School, and 49 at Columbus Intermediate School.
