Nutrition Services

The Nutrition Services Department Welcomes You

The Bedford City Schools Nutrition Services Department is pleased to welcome all of our students back for the 2017-2018 school year. This year there are many federal and state regulations that will impact the operation of our food service. Most of these changes directly affect the make-up of the plate meals we offer to your children. But many regulations will govern snack foods served /sold at school in general, including vending. With students consuming up to 50% of their daily calories at school, it is essential these calories are ones that provide the nourishing energy students need to thrive.*

As you may know, the changes on our menus include additional fruits and vegetables, requirements on the types of grains offered and the weekly offering of red/orange, legumes, and dark green leafy and starchy vegetables.

The aim and sole purpose of these changes is to encourage the consumption of more fruit and vegetables and to teach healthy food choices to all students, all in a national effort to control the growing obesity epidemic throughout the country. Here are some other things you need to know:

Free and Reduced Meal Application
Students must have a 2017 Free and Reduced Meal application on file by October 6, 2017 or have received notification of Direct Certification to continue to be eligible for free and reduced benefits. Students that do not have a 2017-2018 application on file or a Direct Certification notice by October 6, 2017 must be removed from the program as of October 9, 2017. You may submit a Free and Reduced Meal application at any time during the school year.

Options: The Bedford City School District is happy to announce that the 2017-2018 Free and Reduced Application can also be accessible online as well as hardcopy. To access the online application, click here. This application is completely secure, confidential, and can mean a faster consideration of your household status. If you have any questions, please contact the Nutrition Services Department at 440-439-4530.

A letter from the Nutrition Services Department welcoming you to the Free and Reduced Meal Program or denying acceptance will be sent back to everyone who applies. If you do not receive a letter from us, that is an indication we have not received your student's application or that the application is incomplete. USDA forbids processing incomplete applications.

Please note: regardless of the method of applying, families are responsible for any food service charges incurred prior to their child receiving approval for Free and Reduced meals.

Point of Sale (POS)
Bedford City Schools uses a computerized Point of Sale to ring in all student sales. This method preserves the confidentiality of your student’s status in the Free and Reduced program. In addition it allows you to review the purchasing trends your student(s) practice. You are encouraged to put money on your students account in advance. This is intended to avoid excessive handling of cash, speed up the lines and allow your student more time to enjoy their meal. Don’t forget! Any money left over in your student’s POS cafeteria account will follow them to their new grade/school in the Bedford City School District. The POS also allows for warnings, limits, and food allergy notices to be posted on any student’s account for the cashier to monitor.

Food Allergies and Dietary Restrictions
If your child suffers from a food allergy or a dietary restriction, please let the Cafeteria know! You must provide a doctor’s note for any serious allergies or dietary restrictions with appropriate food substitutions every year. For a copy of the Diet Prescription for Special Meals Form, click here. In addition the USDA has changed their liquid milk/ dairy intolerance policy. Nutrition Services may no longer provide a substitution for liquid milk on plate meals unless your doctor provides documentation stating your child suffers a life threatening condition. If your child is lactose intolerant he/she may decline the offered liquid milk as part of the plate meal. Your student may purchase 8 oz bottled water for .50 or 6.75oz 100% juice for .65 or he/she may bring a beverage from home. We urge that you provide only healthier beverages for your child to bring to school.

Meal Prices
We are pleased to announce that prices for plate meals will remain the same as last year. Breakfast may be purchased at Central, Glendale, Carylwood and Columbus for $1.50. Heskett and High School breakfast is $1.75. Children may buy lunch for $2.50 at Central, Glendale, Carylwood and Columbus. Lunch at Heskett and Bedford Sr. High is $2.75. Reduced meals are .30 for breakfast and .40 for lunch. Please note that all returned checks will be assessed a $15 fee.

Goals for a Safe and Healthy Population
It is our goal to safely serve healthy, nutritious and appealing meals to your children. Last year we proudly served almost 600,000 meals to the students of Bedford City Schools. We provide frequent inservices for all Nutrition Services staff on all levels of food safety, food handling, and sanitation. And each of our six kitchens are inspected no less than 12 times a year. In addition, every kitchen employs a least one person with  Level II ServSafe certification and many have Level I PIC certification.

"Eat Right at School"
Bedford City Schools and Cleveland Clinic are working to meet our common goal: Healthy Living, Inside and Out, for Everyone! With this in mind, the monthly menus for Central, Glendale, Carylwood, Columbus, and Heskett schools have been awarded the Cleveland Clinic’s “Eat Right at School” seal of approval for 2012-2013. This recognition means that our menus meet, not only the USDA’s stringent requirements, but also the Cleveland Clinic’s standards for levels of sugar, fat, fruits and vegetables, fiber, calories, and sodium through the Clinic's "Go! Foods" program. The year's menus are also being submitted for renewal.

My School Bucks

The Nutrition Services Department offers MySchoolBucks®. This secure, online payment service provides a quick and easy way to add money to your student’s meal account using a credit/debit card. This service allows you to deposit money directly into your child’s school meal account and view balance/purchase information for the past 90 days.  By having money in each child’s account prior to entering the cafeteria, the lunch lines will move along much faster, which gives your child more time to eat and be with friends.  You can also view recent purchases, check balances, and set-up low balance alerts for FREE!  MySchoolBucks is available 24/7 on the web or through our mobile app for your smartphone. The service enables you to make payments for all your students, even if they attend different schools within the district, and avoids the need for your students to bring money to school. Parents can set low-balance alerts, view account activity, and even make recurring or automatic payments.  The service also adheres to the highest security standards, including PCI and CISP.

Enrollment is easy!
1.    Go to www.MySchoolBucks.com and register for a free account.
2.    Add your students using their school name and student ID.
3.    Make a payment to your students’ accounts with your credit/debit card or electronic check. A program fee may apply.  You will have the opportunity to review any fees and cancel if you choose, before you are charged. If you have any questions, contact MySchoolBucks directly at 1-855-832-5226 or visit the above website and click on Help/FAQ’s.
